McAvoy departs with rebuke to Blair
Tony Blair wants to destroy state education and replace it with a private market in which parents pay for all but the most basic lessons, the outgoing general secretary of the NUT said yesterday.
In his farewell speech to the NUT conference, Doug McAvoy said that New Labour planned a "nightmare" future in which schools were run like supermarkets, selling packets of education according to parents' ability to pay.
