The Standing Conference of Principals (SCOP) is the representative organisation for the colleges and institutes of higher education in England and Northern Ireland. It was established in 1978 and is funded by annual subscription from its members. SCOP was incorporated in 1991 and has charitable status.
The colleges and institutes of HE are part of the unified higher education sector alongside the universities; they are subject to the same quality assurance and public accountability processes. Many HE colleges are specialist institutions concentrating on particular subject disciplines, including: art and design; music, drama and the performing arts; education; agriculture. HE colleges are also major providers of courses in nursing and the health professions.
SCOP's role includes:
- promoting the HE colleges within the totality of British higher education and making the case for continuing diversity in the higher education sector;
- highlighting the interests and strengths of the higher education colleges to government, national and international agencies, employers, potential students and the wider community;
- making an impact on national planning and debate concerning higher education from the college perspective.
