Truancy targets 'abandoned'

Education ministers are to scrap a target of cutting truancy by 10 per cent.

The government intends to move from collecting data on authorised and unauthorised absences to focusing on attendance rates, which it says provide a more accurate picture of what is going on in schools.

The Independent reports that the move comes amid growing expectations that the target will not be hit.
