A study of education policies in the OECD countries claims that schools in western countries could face a crisis as teachers wages are outstripped by other professions.

The report also claims that the UK has one of the lowest adult literacy rates in the industrialised world.

A meeting of OECD education ministers in Paris next week will be urged to do more to promote learning and consider a "radical repositioning" of the teaching profession to maintain its status.
