Social workers could be based in schools under plans to bring services for children under one roof.

The education secretary said yesterday that the decision to transfer children and family social services from the Department of Health into the Department for Education and Skills could lead to the move.

"For the first time in history, government is organising its services around the needs of the child," Charles Clarke said.
