Blunkett to target violent crime
David Blunkett will this week set out plans for a renewed crackdown on young thugs, violent criminals and sex attackers. He wants violent and hardcore offenders to be given longer sentences and for them serve their term in full.
He also wants to see young criminals being forced to compensate their victims.
The "two strikes and you're out" approach has angered campaigners who say Blunkett will "swamp" prisons.
A report to be published this week will instead call on the government to use jail lightly.
