Ministers publish race equality scheme

The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has published its own race equality policy.

The new scheme - a result of consultation with a number of organisations following the publication of a draft version in May 2002 - covers the core of the department as well as two smaller agencies, the Pesticides Safety Directorate and the Veterinary Medicines Directorate.

The remaining agencies have published their own schemes.

Wednesday's document includes issues such as how equality will be promoted within the department, as well as in terms of those affected by its service delivery and policy development.

The department - which replaced the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in 2001 - already offers career development training places specifically for those from ethnic minority backgrounds, and its own support network.

"One of the key values of the department is that we treat everyone fairly and encourage, value and recognise everyone's views and contributions," said rural affairs minister Alun Michael.

"That is easier said than done, which is why we have spent time on the detail.

"I want to make sure that my senior managers and ministerial colleagues both set the best possible example and drive forward the process of change.

"Together we will oversee the delivery of the commitments contained in this scheme."
