Protestors turn up the heat over incinerator

Deputy prime minister John Prescott will be among three Labour MPs for Hull being targeted by a protest outside the House of Commons on Wednesday.

The campaign, organised by local residents and Friends of the Earth, aims to prevent the construction of a waste incinerator in the East of the city.

The plans were rejected by Hull City Council, however an appeal by the company, WRG, has caused a public inquiry to be launched this summer. Campaigners claim that Kingston-upon-Hull and East Riding councils deliberately confused residents by describing it as a "waste regeneration project".

They are calling on Prescott, along with Kevin McNamara (Hull North) and Alan Johnson (Hull West and Hessle) to halt the plans.

Claire Wilton, incinerator campaigner at Friends of the Earth, said the local petition has attracted 26,000 signatures.

"The government's waste strategy is in tatters. Hull is the sixth incinerator to be refused by a local authority in the last 12 months. Three others have been referred to ministers. The government must show it is listening by introducing kerbside recycling for every household in the country. This would avoid the need for new incinerators," she said.
