In Brief: Morris launches 'big science'

Estelle Morris has launched "Big science", a schools initiative aimed at teaching youngsters the science behind everyday objects.

The education secretary announced the scheme as part of the government's science year and in line with plans to give the private sector a greater role in the delivery of education the project is sponsored by supermarket chain Asda.

Children, aged between five and 14, will invent futuristic products, as well as completing activity trails. Promising ideas will be developed in coordination with a consultant employed by Asda.

The education scheme is the fourth devised by the supermarket.

"Every state maintained school has already benefited from Science Year, receiving a digital microscope for use in the classroom. And Science Year is also about helping to raise the profile of science through local projects. I want Science Year to create a lasting legacy, a transformation in attitudes towards science, inside and outside of the classroom. We can only do this if the wider community supports what is happening in schools," said Morris.
