In Brief: Doctors endorse MMR jabs
Doctors have moved to restore confidence in the controversial MMR vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella.
In an attempt to remove doubts about the single jab, over 800 doctors on Thursday issues an "overwhelming endorsement" of the vaccine.
The survey, conducted by the medical website Medix, comes as many parents are failing to immunise their children against the three diseases following claims that the vaccine could be linked to autism and bowel disorders.
It also found that the vast majority of doctors should be free to prescribe three single does vaccines if they wish. Only one of the 800 doctors polled said it would be unacceptable to give children single dose injections.Dr Rino Coladangelo, chief executive of Medix UK plc, said: "The poll showed 74 per cent of doctors felt they should be free to decide about vaccination programmes rather that follow official guidelines to the letter. And half of all doctors felt the Department of Health should make available single vaccines for those who want it. There was an overwhelming endorsement of the safety of the MMR vaccine."
