Home Office minister Paul Boateng has announced a £287,000 scheme to tackle hate crime in London. The scheme will tackle both domestic violence and racially motivated crime.

The award will allow the Metropolitan Police to develop data that will aid the investigation of hate crime, create a system for training and support for officers, improve response and understanding of hate crimes among staff and find better ways of identifying both new and repeat victims.

Announcing the funding, Boateng said: "The scheme will help to improve the way in which the Metropolitan Police tackle hate crime in London. Domestic violence affects too many people in this country and causes far too many people to live their lives in constant fear. That is unacceptable in a civilised society."
