The British Horse Society - Our Successes:

  • The BHS has opened more than 400 miles of promoted bridleways, including the opening of the 96-mile Three Rivers Ride in 2004

  • The BHS trains and tests more than 5,000 new candidates every year in riding and road safety. We have now trained more than 100,000 riders to be safer

  • The BHS Cymru and Forestry Commission (Wales) launched a new Concordat which consolidates the agreement between both organisations to encourage responsible equestrian access to Welsh Assembly Government Woodlands

  • The BHS Scotland has won a Tourism Innovation Development Award enabling a pilot scheme for quality assured tourism accommodation for horses in some of the best riding country of the UK

  • The BHS has succeeded in getting BHS Qualifications recognised in the National Qualification Framework

  • The BHS deals with more than 30,000 welfare related enquiries a year on all aspects of horse care

  • The BHS has achieved more than 8,000 television broadcasts of a Road Safety Video

  • The BHS has issued more than 24,000 passports, which should protect the future availability of many equine medicines. It should also help discourage indiscriminate breeding as well as theft

  • The BHS runs exams for more than 12,000 candidates per annum ensuring professionalism in the equine industry

  • The BHS monitors more than 900 approved establishments to ensure high standards of horse care and welfare, promote sound standards of instruction and safe facilities

  • The BHS Competitions department organised 120 events in 2004, enjoyed by more than 4,000 participants

  • The BHS supports more than 430 affiliated Riding Clubs

  • The BHS-initiated Ragwort Control Act became law in 2004, helping protect all animals from this poisonous weed

  • The BHS leads the Equine Insurance Working Group to identify ways in which the financial pressures caused to proprietors of equestrian establishments by substantial increases in insurance premiums might be alleviated

  • The BHS in Northern Ireland have succeeded in gaining funding in partnership with the Countryside Access and Activities Network for a full-time off-road Horse and Riding Development Officer
