Benefits outweigh child costs

A small minority of parents are receiving more tax breaks and benefits than their children cost them, according to a new report.

A report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies found that such support has more than doubled over the past 30 years, with half of the rise coming since 1999.

Meanwhile, the carers' charity Care suggests today that the system acts as a financial disincentive to separated couples who may want to reunite.

The Commons work and pensions select committee will hear how lone parents gain disproportionately from tax credits.
