Jails failing addict inmates

Britain's prisons are failing to help thousands of drug-addicted criminals who are released without being treated for their habit.

The verdict came with the release of government figures and the admission from ministers that the prison service can only afford to rehabilitate less than a third of inmates who are "problem users".

Every year 18,000 people with drug problems are jailed but by March next year there will only be 6,000 places for rehabilitation.
