Philips warns of new extremism threat
Trevor Philips has described the post-war race relations landscape that is his challenge as the new head of the Commission for Racial Equality.
The far-right BNP, he says, will seek to paint all Muslims as extremists and aliens, while the real extremists will try to drive a wedge between young Muslims and mainstream society.
The challenge for ministers, Muslims and the CRE, Philips argues in a Guardian interview, is to develop the sense of a "British Muslim" in a "credible" way.
