Ministers against child protection agency

The government will not support the creation of a national child protection agency as a solution to weaknesses in the care system highlighted by the Victoria Climbie inquiry, today's Telegraph reports.

Lord Laming's report into the murder of the eight year old concluded that child protection must not be separated from investigations, and says that such an agency would be counter productive.

Laming's 100 recommendations, to be made public next Tuesday, emphasises the need for professionals to work together in an overhauled but integrated child welfare system.
