Meacher backs plans for tax on rubbish
Environment minister Michael Meacher is supporting a plan to charge householders to have their rubbish removed - in spite of opposition from Gordon Brown.
Meacher said yesterday that the public would have to accept that it faces a major change in the way waste is disposed.
He also allocated a further £40 million to local councils to deal with the "fridge mountain", which has been blamed on new European directives.
