Iain Duncan Smith has called for charities to be given greater freedom from the state in order for them to help "heal society's ills".

Speaking to the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations yesterday, the Tory leader said that he and Michael Howard, the shadow chancellor, are "examining carefully how we can reform our tax laws in a way that will help the voluntary sector".
