A serious mental illness, like schizophrenia, strikes one in every hundred people in the UK. However, one in four of us will experience some form of mental health problem this year.

Although often hidden, the effects on families, our work and our selves can be devastating. In the year of SANE's 15th anniversary we have sought to represent here the views and experiences of the many thousands of people with mental illness, and their relatives, who seek us out for practical help, care and support which they have been unable to find elsewhere.

What we, with other mental health organisations, hope to achieve this year and in the coming years - a revolution in care and treatment - is simply not possible without the support of parliamentarians in Westminster and politicians in the Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales and the Northern Ireland Assembly.
