Environment minister Michael Meacher yesterday told the Commons environment select committee that a "fridge mountain" caused by new EU waste disposal legislation had revealed Britain to be behind in the development of new technology.

The situation had highlighted that British businesses needed to improve in identifying opportunities from new environment legislation, he told MPs.

He also said that current problems were not due to UK incompetence but caused by the European Commission.
