Government attacked over EU electrical goods ruling

The government has come under fire from local councils for failing to to decide how to implement an EU ruling on electrical goods.

The EU Waste and Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive is due to come into force in 2004-2005 and means that items such as mobile phones must be recycled by their manufacturers.

Local councils believe the government's failure to decide how to implement the directive will lead to a huge rise in abandoned goods on Britain's streets.
