Both the CBI and TUC's New Year messages focus on the importance of Europe to British industry.

CBI chief Digby Jones will focus on greater labour market flexibility, business friendly regulation and liberalisation of financial services, energy and transport.

And TUC general secretary John Monks will warn that a failure to campaign for joining the euro could lead to thousands more jobs being lost in manufacturing industry.
