Ministers will today move to avert a full-scale health scare over the risks posed by landfill sites.

The Department of Health will publish evidence suggesting the sites pose no risks ahead of a British Medical Journal report due for publication tomorrow which says a higher incidence of birth defects have been detected around landfill areas.
