The home secretary is to hold a summit of chief constables from across England and Wales in a bid to underline how determined he is to see through radical police reform.

The "summit", to be held later this month, follows alarm within police ranks following David Blunkett's high profile intervention in the sacking of the Sussex police chief Paul Whitehouse.

Whitehouse has announced that he is to leave his post immediately.
