The former Chilean dictator, general Augusto Pinochet, is likely to escape trail for murder and kidnapping charges related to his 17-year period in power after a Santiago court ruled that he was mentally unfit.

The appeals court, which voted two to one, in favour of the 85-year old Pinochet, had received a medical report showing "partial dementia".
