More leave for new mothers

Mothers will now have the right to a year's unpaid maternity leave under new rules announced by trade and industry secretary, Stephen Byers, yesterday.

Women seeking the leave will have to give employers increased notice and will come into effect in 2003 following the extension of paid leave in this year's budget.

The government is to set up a new independent commission composed of the existing Low Pay Commission with representatives from trade unions, business and academia to work out the best model for increased flexible working for new mothers.
