Turkish Novelist's Trial
Former Europe Minister Denis MacShane MP has welcomed the decision of the Turkish government to stop the trial of Orhan Pamuk the world famous Turkish novelist "Turkey has sent a clear signal in support of European values. However much as Orhan's friends and supporters will share his relief we must not forget the 60 other journalists, writers and academics who still face prosecution under censorship laws that have no place in a modern Turkey aiming at EU membership," said MacShane. The former European minister attended Pamuk's trial last month when he was punched and jostled by ultra nationalist anti-EU militants who want Pamuk imprisoned because the writer says Turkey should discuss openly the deaths of Armenians and Kurds in Turkey during the past 100 years.
