Research gets £15m government boost
Scientific research has received a £15 million boost from the government.
Laboratories involved in cutting-edge projects like developing medical equipment and DNA profiling will receive cash to help their discoveries succeed in the marketplace.
Science minister Lord Sainsbury announced on Monday that the government would be continuing with its drive to make Britain a global leader in hi-tech research and manufacturing.
"Without backing and support in the early stages, commercial opportunities arising from scientific discoveries and new technologies can be lost," he said.
"This funding is intended to capitalise on the cutting-edge research taking place in the public sector. It is vital for UK business and our quality of life that innovative ideas make it beyond the drawing-board and become successful products and services."
In the latest stage of the government's Public Sector Research Exploitation programme, a total of 16 projects will share the money to fund new ideas.
