Minister launches winter warmth campaign

The government has launched its annual campaign to help the elderly keep warm this winter.

As well as support from voluntary groups for the Keep Warm Keep Well campaign, ministers have also secured the help of British Gas, which will send information packs to all older customers who are monitored on the special care register.

Other supporters include Age Concern, Help the Aged, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Department for Work and Pensions, and National Energy Action.

An advice line has also been established, offering details of financial assistance available.

This includes the Warm Front scheme, which offers funding to older people for improved heating and insulation.

The launch is timed to coincide with the United Nations Older People's Day.

"The emphasis in this vital campaign is on practical help and advice for vulnerable people to keep themselves warm and healthy this winter," said health minister Dr Stephen Ladyman.

"We know that many people are at risk during the winter and that there is a direct link between cold weather and a higher death rate especially amongst older people and other vulnerable groups."

The minister said that the campaign last year had prompted a "good take-up" of the advice line and resulted in extra support to a lot of people.
