Alcohol abuse consultation begins
Ministers will today spell out their latest efforts to tackle alcohol misuse.
Following last week's publication of a consultation "National Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy" the government is seeking "feedback" ahead of producing a final report next summer.
Public health minister, Hazel Blears and Home Office drugs minister, Bob Ainsworth, will outline plans to clampdown on underage drinking and alcohol fuelled yobs.
Downing Street has thrown the full weight of Number 10's Strategy Unit behind commitments to have a national alcohol strategy in place by 2004.
Campaigners are calling on ministers to adopt "a more realistic approach" to alcohol.
British National Temperance League chief, Peter Swales, believes abuse is part of wider drugs culture malaise."It is perceived as the norm to drink alcohol - often to excess, and often in conjunction with other so called 'recreational' drugs - especially among the 20 and 30 somethings," he said.
"Clubs and vodka-based 'alcopops' are seen as obvious partners, but the effects and real costs are only beginning to emerge."
"The NHS is overburdened unnecessarily, and the police have to deal with the violence, road accidents and breaking of tragic news to parents and other loved ones. Where does it end?"
