A powerful voice
The Energy Retail Association established in October 2003 is the only dedicated trade association for energy suppliers. All the main energy suppliers operating in the domestic market in the UK are members of the new association - British Gas, EDF Energy, npower, Powergen, Scottish and Southern Energy, Scottish Power.

The ERA was set up by the industry in order to identify areas where energy suppliers can work together for the common good without competitive advantage. We will seek to build links with our stakeholders to improve the profile of the sector with decision makers, opinion formers and consumers. Through our relations with government agencies we will look to protect the industry from regulation that stifles commercial development and assist the industry in the operation of effective self-regulation procedures.

The ERA is headed by our Chief Executive, Duncan Sedgwick, who was formerly Retail Director of Powergen. He is given high level direction from a Board made up of the chief executive offficers of our member companies. For its first year the Board has identified six topics as our main priorities. These are fuel poverty, energy efficiency, sales practice, changing supplier, debt, and renewables (see Our policies).
