CILT, the National Centre for Languages is the Government's recognised centre of expertise on languages. The organisation's mission is to promote a greater capability in languages amongst all sectors of the UK population.
The National Centre for Languages was formed in 2003 through the merger of the Centre for Information on Language Teaching and Research and the Languages National Training Organisation. The creation of the new organisation was announced as part of the Government's National Languages Strategy. It plays a key role in managing national initiatives in support of language capability and the implementation of the National Strategy as well as offering a wide range of services for teachers, learners, researchers, users and providers of language services and the business community.
CILT is based in London but operates throughout the United Kingdom, in partnership with its sister organisations CILT Cymru, Northern Ireland CILT and Scottish CILT. It pursues its objectives via a series of collaborative networks:
-
Regional Language Networks which were set up in each English region and each devolved administration by the Languages National Training Organisation.
- A network of regional Comenius Centres based on collaborations with partner institutions.
-
National partners with an interest in developing the UK's language capability.
CILT is a registered charity number 313938. It derives its finance from central government grants, income generated by programme activities, and funds received from diverse public funding sources for specific projects. CILT carries out its work under the direction of a Board of Governors, whose Chair is Richard Bunker. Isabella Moore CBE is Director of CILT. CILT's Patron is Sir Trevor McDonald.
