The government, MPs and some police sources have been briefing against Nottinghamshire police chief Steve Green who complained at the weekend that his force was struggling to cope with gun crime.

The prime minister's spokesman pointed out that he had received extra funds and dedicated help from the Police Standards Unit.

However Conservative leader Michael Howard said: "The police now spend as much time behind their desks filling in forms as they do on our streets."
