Blair to boost minimum wage

At his monthly press conference in Downing Street, Tony Blair will today announce plans for an increase in the minimum wage.

The prime minister is expected to risk the wrath of businesses, announcing a rise from the current £4.85 to around £5.05 in October and rising further to £5.30 a year later.

Unions have welcomed the expected move, but businesses have warned that it could lead to job losses.
