Hoon sets out sweeping army reforms
Defence secretary Geoff Hoon has set out the new structure of the Army with big changes to infantry battalions.
The new model is based on larger regiments combining famous regimental names under new regional headings.
After a request from the colonels of the Scottish Division, General Sir Mike Jackson, the chief of the general staff, agreed to preserve the identities of the present Scottish regiments using a formula that has not been followed elsewhere in the infantry.
Hoon told MPs the object was to make the Army more robust and to build up key specialist capabilities, such as engineers, logistics and intelligence experts.
Annabelle Ewing, the Scottish National Party MP for Perth, was ordered out of the House of Commons chamber by the deputy speaker, Sir Alan Haselhurst, after refusing to apologise for calling Geoff Hoon a "backstabbing coward".
