British firms will have to add millions of pounds to their pension funds under a new European Union directive that will demand tighter funding levels.

In a letter to Malcolm Wicks, the pensions minister, Christine Farnish, chief executive of the National Association of Pension Funds, has demanded urgent clarification on how Britain will implement the new rules.
