The pensions secretary made a late addition to the government's flagship savings legislation as he presented it to the Commons yesterday.

In a bid to placate critics who fear the Pensions Bill is not tough enough, Andrew Smith added a clause insisting on employer consultation with staff before workplace savings schemes are changed.
