Immigration row prompts resignation call

Beverley Hughes, the Home Office minister in charge of immigration, admitted yesterday that key checks on immigrants from Eastern Europe were waived without her knowledge or that of senior officials in her department.

She said that a changeover of staff in her office at the Home Office was to blame for the concerns of a whistleblower not being brought to her attention until Sunday - eight weeks after they had first been raised.

The minister was speaking in response to an emergency question tabled by David Davis, the shadow home secretary, who told her: "Collusion, cover-up or simple incompetence, the responsibility for this disgrace rests firmly with you and the home secretary."

Davis later called on Hughes to resign.

Meanwhile the Mail's front page accuses the government of "migrant mayhem" while the Express highlights news that the civil servant who revealed the "cover-up" has been suspended.
