Fire chiefs have warned the government that they will have to cut jobs or raise their council tax levy by up to 36 per cent to fund the fire fighters’ pay deal and service reforms.

The deputy prime minister has told all 46 fire authorities that they will have to limit council tax rises to “low single figures”.
