President of the European Central Bank Jean Claude Trichet has voiced his concerns over the rapid rise in the value of the euro.

Such exchange rate volatility was "not welcome and not appropriate", he said yesterday, adding that policymakers within the ECB were equally concerned. "We are certainly not indifferent," he said.

The value of the euro fell in response to his comments.
