Hewitt calls for Christmas cheer

Trade secretary Patricia Hewitt has asked big stores not to open on Christmas day to allow thousands of workers to enjoy the festivities with their families.

The appeal has been made as laws for an official shut-down will not be in place until next year.

Stores have reported a slow start to the Christmas period and are hoping for a late surge. John Lewis reports sales are up just one per cent on last year.
