The Telegraph reports that soaring crime is becoming a threat to life in the rural shires.

Burglaries in the countryside have soared by 5.7 per cent over the last year and have risen three-fold since 1983.

The news comes as the home secretary revealed he is considering plans to allow local communities to buy their own policing.
