Women's pay breaks £20,000 barrier

A sharp rise in pay settlements has seen the average pay for women break the £20,000 barrier for the first time.

Trade secretary Patricia Hewitt welcomed the figures but said the government would do more to remove the remaining barriers to equal pay.

Campaigners warned, however, that achieving parity would take up to 85 years on current trends.
