Reid takes action against cancer 'postcode lottery'

NHS trusts will soon have to explain to some patients why they are still being denied cancer drugs despite government efforts to end the "postcode lottery".

Health secretary John Reid announced that the government's cancer care director Professor Mike Richards will investigate why nationally-approved drugs are not reaching patients and money allocated for cancer treatment is not being spent.

Figures revealed yesterday that rates of cancer among under-75s had dropped by 10 per cent.
