Minimum wage set to rise

The prime minister will announce tomorrow that the minimum wage for Britain's low-paid workers is to rise to £4.50 an hour.

The seven per cent increase will take effect in October, with a further increase to £4.85 pencilled in for October 2004 provided that the economy has managed to ride out the problems caused by the downturn in the global economy
