Leading universities with middle-class intakes are set to lose money for teaching.

The warning comes as the government announced an extra £265 million to attract disadvantaged students.

A five-fold increase in support for students with low A-level grades and those from poor backgrounds was announced yesterday.

This will mean less funds for leading universities, such as Oxford and Cambridge, and more for the newer universities.

Academics predict "thousands" of job losses following the decision.
