The unions are refusing to back a £40 million donation to the Labour Party because of the government's hardline stance on the fire dispute.

A senior source at the GMB union told today's Independent: "Politically we cannot give a commitment to sign off £40 million of trade unionists' money at a time when the government is trying to rub Andy Gilchrist's nose in the dirt."
