The nuclear option will be kept open in the forthcoming energy white paper, despite the financial crisis at British Energy and continuing concerns over long-term waste disposal, a top DTI official has hinted.

Joan MacNaughton, director-general of energy at the Department of Trade and Industry, told delegates at an atomic energy conference that ministers believed British Energy's problems were specific to the company, rather than difficulties with nuclear energy in general.
