NHS patients to get approval for operations abroad

NHS patients are to be given the option of escaping waiting lists by having routine operations abroad.

An evaluation of experiments involving 190 patients sent to France and Germany for cataract, hip or knee surgery found clinical standards were high and that patients were positive about the experience.

NHS staff were less enthusiastic about the initiative, regarded as a lot of effort to remove only a few from the waiting lists.
