Alan Milburn is demanding extra cash for NHS IT systems as final Whitehall jockeying for cash in the comprehensive spending review enters the endgame.

The health secretary is lobbying for a £5 billion boost to NHS spending on IT to move towards electronic patient records, digital prescriptions, booked admissions and other technological advances.
